As a CRUX newbie, I was challenged to grok the package system from the Handbook. I offer the attached small ed file to clarify (1) the expected skills to work with CRUX, and (2) clarification of what packages are and how the package system maps into the standard recipe for installing tarballs.

I added one and a half sentences to that first paragraph to introduce patch files and the definition of a port.

I broke out the package components into an ordered list and some miscellaneous readability changes. Obviously I vote for this version. :-)

Hmmm... in case the ed script is too opaque, here's a diff -C 1 listing of the previous ed listing.

Hopefully renaming that to ...C1.txt will open in your browser more readably.

Here is an expansion: a new paragraph/subsection to segue from the Package System to the Ports System, and another at the end of the Ports section to discuss private collections.

Thanks for your work!
However, I must say I don't really agree with the tone of some of the changes.

Will look it over in more detail for 3.2.

I was seeking the middle ground for that tone based on everything I've read so far regarding entry level skill sets for CRUX newbies and getting support. There is a bit of range in that sample, I hope you would agree. I would love to see a project consensus on style but I doubt that has a sufficiently high priority for folks to hammer that out. I hope you do not consider anything I wrote to be rude!

Personally, i would say from what i read in Handbook3-1.htm.C1.txt, it is a bit too harsh for my desire. But in general it's a nice idea to make the handbook more useful for newcomers.

I would disagree with "the upstream source tarball untouched by CRUX" as it certainly can happen, right?
